Techniques for Language Learning

Learning a new language, like any kind of new skill, can seem like an exciting and then daunting task at first. There are tons of new characters, pronunciation, semantics to learn. It probably hardly seems worth your time unless you're simply planning on moving to a new country. This is the exact opposite of true and there are several techniques which can help you learn your new language of choice. The three basic areas of language learning are pronunciation and listening comprehension, vocabulary, and, grammar.

Pronunciation and listening comprehension is important because it will help native speakers of the language understand you much better. The key to these traits is to spend time trying to tune your ears to the language's unique sounds and rhythms. The easy way to do this is by listening to your new language constantly on the radio, TV, the movies and any native speakers you happen to come across.

Learning the grammar of your new language is helpful because you will be able to understand how sentences are constructed so you can construct your own sentences and read sentences that are placed before you. You'll want to learn word order, regular and irregular patterns, and redundancy. Shape shifting is another concept that is helpful in learning a foreign language. This is when words change depending on their usage, as a noun, a verb, or an adjective.

The vocabulary of a language is its very building blocks. The easiest way to pick up on the vocabulary of a foreign language is to associate your language with the new language, usually by words which sound similar. To ensure the new words stick to your memory, try to make tests on them regularly in measured time intervals. When you have single words down, switch to phrases. When you have phrases down, switch to sentences. Then grow to paragraphs and on and on until eventually you can write your Ph.D. In your new language. Hint: Please do not go that far, but if you do, come back and teach at The Alliance for Language Learning!
