Teaching ESL. About Teaching.Teaching ESL is a fantastic option for people who have a passion for teaching and helping people to improve their English, and who also wish to travel abroad and experience another culture. Teaching jobs are available in many places all over the world for people who wish to teach ESL. Depending on the level of experience, qualifications, and background a person has, different opportunities will be available. In certain places, such as in Western European countries, a candidate for an ESL teaching position will be expected to have some experience teaching English as well as a degree in teaching from a university. However, more opportunities exist in developing nations for native English speakers who do not have any teaching degrees or experience.
Different options are available for people who wish to expand the job opportunities available to them in the ESL teaching field. It is possible to obtain certificates in teaching English in a short period of time. In some cases, travel opportunities are available with these courses. A prospective student may move to a foreign country and take an intensive month-long teaching course with a guaranteed position available upon completion of the course. In other cases, courses for teaching certification may be available online. Two of the most common and widely accepted teaching certificates are the CELTA, or Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, and TEFL, or teaching English as a foreign language. Obtaining one of these certificates, particularly the CELTA, opens up a wide array of job opportunities, and sometimes may even ensure a better salary.
Adjusting to life in a foreign country once a person secures a teaching job can initially be difficult, but it is ultimately a very rewarding experience. It is a unique opportunity to live abroad for a period of time and perhaps even travel around a bit, all while helping people to learn an extremely useful foreign language.
